AI Writing Tools Cost Comparison: What You Actually Pay
Same workload, four tools, four very different bills. We calculated the real monthly cost of writing fiction with AI — including what happens when you stop paying.
The short answer
If you write 10 stories per month (a steady hobbyist pace), here's what a year costs:
| Monthly cost | Year 1 total | Year 2 total | Cost per story | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sudowrite | $19/mo | $228 | $456 | $1.90 |
| NovelAI | $10/mo | $120 | $240 | $1.00 |
| Jasper | $39/mo | $468 | $936 | $3.90 |
| PlotMorph | $0 (after first $9.90) | $9.90 | $9.90 | $0.08 |
Pricing as of October 2026, from each tool's public pricing page. Sudowrite = $19/mo Starter; NovelAI = $10/mo Tablet; Jasper = $39/mo Creator. PlotMorph = $9.90 one-time. Usage assumption: 10 stories/month.
What you're actually paying for
All four tools use large language models to generate text. The underlying compute cost for generating a 900-word story is fractions of a cent — regardless of which tool you use. The price difference isn't the AI; it's the business model wrapped around it.
- Sudowrite ($19/mo): Story-focused AI with credits, chapters, and canvas tools. Strong for novelists who want structure. Credits reset monthly — unused ones don't roll over.
- NovelAI ($10/mo): Image + text generation with a focus on anime/fantasy styles. Cheapest subscription tier, but text quality varies and stories need heavy editing.
- Jasper ($39/mo): Marketing-first AI writing. Has a story mode but it's not the focus. You're paying for the marketing suite whether you use it or not.
- PlotMorph ($9.90 once): Story-only tool. Complete short stories from one-line ideas. No credits, no resets, no account. The trade-off: fewer features (no chapters, no canvas, no image gen).
The hidden cost: what happens when you stop paying
This is the part no pricing page mentions. With all three subscription tools, when you cancel:
- Your generated stories are technically yours, but...
- You lose access to the tool that made them
- You lose any workflow or presets you set up
- Your credits vanish (Sudowrite's don't roll over even while active)
- If you come back later, you start from month one pricing again
With PlotMorph, "stopping" means... nothing. There's no subscription to cancel. The $9.90 you paid is done. The tool keeps working because it runs in your browser and the AI cost is negligible. Your stories are text files on your machine.
When a subscription IS the right choice
To be fair: if you're writing a novel and need chapter management, version history, and a visual canvas, Sudowrite's $19/mo is a reasonable price for those workflow tools. The subscription model makes sense when the tool provides ongoing infrastructure — servers, storage, collaboration features — not just AI generation.
For short-form fiction writers (flash, short stories, bedtime stories, game prep), who just need "idea in, story out," PlotMorph's one-time model is the honest price. If you only write 3 stories a month, $19/mo is $6.33 per story. $9.90 once is $0.28 per story in month one, and free forever after.
Methodology
Cost-per-story calculated as (total annual cost) ÷ (stories per month × 12). Subscription prices from public pricing pages as of October 2026. PlotMorph's $9.90 is a one-time payment for unlimited generation. We are PlotMorph's makers — this comparison is transparent about that, and we've included the "when to choose a subscription instead" section because it's genuinely true.
